COOLANTS – THE FOUNDATION OF BAKSS

The coolant production workshop was the first seed from which today’s robust BAKSS Company has grown.

At first glance, the process seems simple—just mixing raw reagents. However, this apparent simplicity proved fatal for many coolant producers. Despite its straightforward nature, coolant production demands precise component dosing above all. A seemingly minor volumetric dosing error of just 1–2% can raise the crystallization onset temperature (the key performance indicator for coolants) by 3–4°C. Without rigorous quality control of both raw materials and finished products, substandard goods inevitably reach the market.

From the moment LLC “BAKSS” was founded in 2001, General Director A.A. Spirin committed to building a full-cycle production facility fully accountable for meeting all declared product specifications. Strict adherence to formulations and the use of precision weighing equipment for accurate component dosing became the cornerstone of product quality. From virtually day one, the in-house production laboratory monitored all key parameters of the finished products.

Very quickly, the company abandoned pre-made concentrate and transitioned to producing coolants and heat transfer fluids directly from base chemical reagents: monoethylene glycol and propylene glycol. This strategic move significantly expanded the product range by enabling the incorporation of advanced anticorrosive additives and the development of innovative formulations. For example, the propylene glycol-based heat transfer fluid “ECO+” is suitable for climate control systems in residential and office buildings.

New formulations at BAKSS are developed in close collaboration with scientists from the Department of Organic Chemistry at Dzerzhinsk Polytechnic Institute (DPI), Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R.E. Alekseev. A prime example of this successful partnership is the “Ice Stream” Carboxylate Antifreeze, which fully complies with modern requirements for carboxylate-based coolants.

Today, the coolant production workshop has evolved far beyond its humble beginnings. A significantly expanded fleet of modern process equipment has substantially increased output capacity. The electronic weighing system installed and commissioned in 2011 not only eased operators’ workload but also elevated reagent dosing accuracy to a new level. Heated mixers, chemically resistant reactors with anchor agitators, and state-of-the-art pumps now enable batch production of up to 26 metric tons.

As a result, BAKSS’s current coolant production—whether it’s the modern “Ice Stream” Carboxylate Antifreeze —represents a synthesis of technological expertise, advanced equipment, and a serious commitment to quality assurance.

Tosol is what BAKSS started with. And even today, despite the company’s extensive product portfolio, coolants and heat transfer fluids remain the foundation of BAKSS’s success and its hallmark offering.
